Know About the Horticultural Sector Crisis in Australia

The government's approach to the horticultural sector problem has been dubbed "an insult" by one Independent TD.

The government has released a working paper to address the issues surrounding peat availability for Ireland's professional horticulture sector. The government working paper is full of ideas and aspirations, but no solutions, forcing Ireland to import peat at a significant cost to the sector and the environment. Due to this pandemic farming sector and horticultural sector, both are suffering.

Claims of horticulture labour shortage have been around for a long time, but they reached a peak level during the pandemic (Covid 19). Data on how many people are actually selecting our fruits, veggies, and nuts have been lacking in the past. However, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has been surveying horticulture (fruit, vegetable, and nut) growers every year for the past two years. The findings were recently published and make for fascinating reading.

The number of backpackers (tourists who work while on vacation) has decreased by 26%. This is a big decrease, but it pales in comparison to the overall dip in backpackers in Australia, which dropped from around 140,000 when the borders were closed in March 2021 to around 40,000 in March 2021. This reflects the incentives offered to travelers to work on farms, as well as the fact that the epidemic had a greater impact on city jobs. In 2020–21, the average monthly number of backpackers (27,867) is remarkably comparable to the number of second and third-year backpacker extensions given for agricultural labour that year (29,121).

According to ABARES, 52 percent of Australian farmers and horticultural farmers experienced more or much more difficulty recruiting. However, only 20% reported fewer workers, with the decrease in the number of workers mostly occurring on larger farms, which are more reliant on foreign labour.
